The Nanaimo Men’s Amateur Tournament is held each year during the week (Wednesday – Saturday) following the BC Day August long weekend. The tournament was previously an “Open” from 1970 – 1973, when it was converted to an “Amateur Only” in 1974. 2024 was the 48th Edition of the tournament, having not been conducted in 2015, 2020, and 2021. It is a 3-day individual stroke-play tournament from the Blue Tees (6321 yards) with an Overall Flight and 4 handicap flights, with a maximum 208-player field. Previous years’ players will receive a personal “Priority Entry” invitation on 1 April and have until 15 May to accept entry and make payment. Read the Invitation Letter carefully for entry instructions. Afterwards, waitlisted players start to be offered entry into vacant spots. Any concerns or questions can be directed to the Tournament Director.
There are both Gross and Net prizes in each flight, 1st – 5th place in each flight. Prize table exceeds $15,000. There is a MAXIMUM of an 18 HANDICAP allowed in the tournament for scoring and Net prizing purposes. Previous years and future players who gain entry, who have an 18+ handicap ARE ALLOWED, knowing your scoring is limited to an 18 handicap. There is a player’s entry Waitlist each year which is a “rolling waitlist” from year to year. As players come off the waitlist each year, everyone moves up the ladder for next year. It is never too early to get on the Waitlist. Contact the Tournament Director (TD) at [email protected].
In addition to NGC Men members (NO Juniors allowed, EXCEPT by special invitation at the discretion of the TD), players come from many other golf clubs on Vancouver Island and the BC province. The history of the tournament has players that have come from Nova Scotia, Ontario, Quebec, Alberta, Washington State, Oregon, Florida, Australia, UK and Hong Kong.
The entry fee includes 3 rounds of golf, 3 dinner meals, 3 Beer & Burger, 3 Pop/Water and prizes. There are specialty prizes with flighted Skins & Deuces, Hole-In-One insurance and flighted KPs. Dinners are a Chicken & Ribs BBQ on Thursday, a Salmon BBQ on Friday, and a Banquet Buffet and Ceremony on Saturday. All players receive lunch from our famous Hamburger Stand at the turn each day.
There is also the Long Drive Competition (Player’s Only) after Wednesday practice round (NOT included in entry fee). Booking a practice round is available through the Pro Shop starting 1 July. The Horserace competition (Invitation Only) after the round on Thursday. The Chip-Over-The-Pond (Open to all players, family members and guests), in support of NGC Junior Golf runs after Friday’s round 6:00-11:00pm.
